Default Trane XR12 Heating elements heating on Cooling Mode

My unit heating element comes on (contactor for the elements will close) when the unit calls for cooling, I set the thermostat on cooling mode instead of auto. So what part is bad that would send signal for the heating element to come on? Cooling is working fine as I can feel the A shape evaporator is cold and the suction line is cold and sweating and the liquid line is at room temp or slightly warm.

Is this a heat pump? If so, see if the thermostat is commanding Aux heat or Emerg Heat. There should be a wire for each. Is the contactor being commanded to close or is it stuck closed?

Has this always worked correctly and suddenly it behaves differently, or was something changed or replaced?

If it is a heat pump (sounds like it is) you can try disconnecting the aux/emergency heat wire from the terminal strip on the unit's terminal strip (don't disconnect it at the t-stat)

Did you mess with the t-stat? Many new ones have dip (or soft) switches to program how it behaves. Make sure they were not bumped or reset.
