  • Wood spoon - What wood type to use?

    What type of wood should be used to make a wooden spoon? Or perhaps a better question, is there types that should not be used?
    I was thinking of using some ash or tulip poplar.

    You could probably get away with about anything. A tight grain wood may hold up to getting wet better.

    I googled 'wood for cooking utensils' and it came back with quite a few debates. Oddly, I didnt see ash mentioned. I figured ash would be good (would think prices would be high due to the borer bug going around). I would think poplar would start to come apart since it's kinda stringy/fiberous.

    If you can handle working with it, how about something like maple? i saw cherry mentioned a few times.

      I have an ash to cut down do to ash borer. I was thinking of using some chunks of that.
      I also have some tulip I cut last year that went over in a storm.
      I'll look into it more. I think I have some maple around also.

        I love cooking using wooden spoons. Wife got tons of it made of mahogany and I would say they are still looking great after five years now.
