    Default 2017 NEC 3-way Wiring

I am getting conflicting information on a question related to a three way lighting circuit I am installing. Id like to make the three way connection at the first j-box in the series and simply run a 14-3 down to the second switch. Meaning, the first box in the series will have two 14-3 cables (one from each switch) and a 14-2 cable running to the next light. One switch box will receive the hot supply cable from the panel, then have a 14-3 out to the first light. The other switch will only have the 14-3 between the switch and the first light. The wiring connections will be made at the light. I have calculated the box volumes and no problems there. Is there any reason I cant wire it this way rather than having the 14-3 running all the way between both switches?

Id like to avoid the 14-2 between the second switch and the light because the walls are spray foamed and additional wiring in the walls is a pain.

    Your thoughts are appreciated. Thanks!

There are many legal ways to do a 3 way. From your description I can't tell where everything is. Where is power coming from? Is it power -> switch1 -> light box and that light box has a 14-3 to switch 2 and a 14-2 to the next light? If so, then I think it will work (the 14-3 to switch 2 is two travelers and a switched hot return, the 14-3 to switch 1 is two travelers and the neutral).

I have 14-2 running from the panel to switch 1. 14-3 running from switch 1 to light 1. 14-3 running from switch 2 to light 1. Then a series of lights from light 1 on 14-2 cable. I hope that helps clarify.

    That will work just fine.
