Default turn off google chrome updates

How do I turn off or at least set to manual, chrome updates? I like to know when things get installed on my PC.
An update installed today and turned everything to grey instead of blue. It makes it look like it is not the active window.

I thought check for updates was under advanced in settings.. It's a bit hidden. They may have moved or removed it though. I don't use chrome very much.

I also noticed on my win7 box (older version of chrome) that it ran a update service.. googleupdateservice i think.. you can go into services and set it to disabled (manual will still let google start it).

If you really wanna wrench on it, you can block the update service in your firewall (provided that you have a 2 way firewall running... something you "should" do). You would have to manually install the updates then.

If you run win 10 home it may try to update for you. ms took away some update control in that edition..

There is nothing I can find in the settings to control updates.
I like to know when updates are being installed on my machine. I dislike letting anything control my machine over me. I want to know what is being done to my machine.

I mostly only use chrome when I want to freely access sites and not have access to my logged in facebook etc. In firefox I have no scriopt and adblocker installed. and I normally have Facebook logged in. If I want to go to a site and not have them see my facebook log in, I open chrome. If it is something that on facebook but I don't want my name on it I have a different facebook login for that.

Do you have a recommendation for a two way firewall? I used to have one in XP but it didn't convert over to Win7. Free would be good.

Did you check for the GoogleUpdate service?

Google Update Service (gupdate) - GoogleUpdate.exe - Program Information

You can usually get into services by right clicking on the 'computer' icon in the start menu and clicking manage. Find the services menu item on the left (could be a second services option inside of it). Find google update and right click on it. set it to disabled (might have to open properties first)

I use Comodo firewall. Kinda cumbersome to learn and use but it works.

There was two google updates running gupdate and gupdatem. I disabled both of them.

I downloaded comodo. I will give it a try. Are there any quirks you can share with me.
