Default New deck over brick patio

My son and son-in-law are in the process of building a low level deck over a brick patio. Not sure of the brick are cemented to the ground or not. I don't think so. My son is kind of the lead on this. The deck will be a little larger than the patio. Where the patio is near the house, he intends to just let the posts rest on the brick. Imo, all the post should be in the ground. rather than just the ones outside of the perimeter of the brick.
    Comments appreciated.

I wouldnt do that. If half the deck is in the ground and half is on the ground it won't stay level or stable very long. This could be a bigger issue if the ground freezes there. Local code may have something to say about this too. If he doesn't want to dig near the house he can use a ledger board, but it will become part of the house, and you may have to pay property taxes on it and may need permits to be legal.

I was thinking along those lines in regard to the stability of the deck.
I would at least put all the post in the ground then maybe run my joist a little past the post on the house side, if I did not want to attach it to the house. It will basicallt be a wooden patio near ground level.
