Refrigerator is Noisy or Loud

The 5 most common part(s) or condition(s) which cause the symptom Refrigerator is noisy or loud are listed below starting with the most likely. Check or test each item.

Fan Blade

If the refrigerator is noisy or loud, especially when the door is opened, check to see if the fan blade in the compartment behind the back panel turns freely. If not, see if the blade is rubbing against anything. Correct any rubbing and try again. Also, check the condenser fan blade to see if it's rubbing or if something is caught in the fan blade. The condenser fan is either underneath in the back or on the top of most built-in refrigerators.

Evaporator Fan Motor

If the refrigerator is noisy or loud the evaporator fan motor might be worn out. These fan motors often make a chirping or squealing noise when they fail. They can also make a loud rumbling or grinding noise. If this is the problem, the noise will be much louder when the door is opened. If that's true, replace the evaporator fan motor.

Condenser Fan Motor

If the refrigerator is noisy or loud there might be something caught in the condenser fan motor blade, or the condenser fan motor bearings might be defective. The condenser fan motor is located underneath the refrigerator near the back. Pull the refrigerator out from the wall and remove the access panel to access it.

Compressor

If the refrigerator compressor is noisy or loud it may be normal. Some compressors are louder than others and some get a little noisier over time. If the compressor is making an unusual noise or is noisier than it used to be, it might be worn out or wearing out. It is not dangerous to run a compressor when it is noisy. Sometimes compressors last for years even after they become noisy. However, if the noise continues to worsen be aware that a compressor failure is likely in the near future. A technician should look at this problem soon.

Water Inlet Valve

If the refrigerator is noisy or loud, particularly when the ice maker is filling, the water inlet valve might be at fault. The noise can be caused by a restriction in the valve from mineral deposits. If it is the water inlet valve that's loud during ice maker fill (or cold water dispensing if applicable) it will need to be replaced. It is not safe to take apart these valves as they can fail and flood after dis-assembly.
