Hi. New member here. Hope you guys can help me out. About a month ago the compressor would cycle off, but when it went to start again it would cycle on and off like it was locked up. If I unplug it and let it set for a little while it comes right back on. It will sit for a good while before the tstat tries to start it again, so it should'nt have high head pressure. When it comes back on the temp drops fast and compressor is just warm, not hot at all. Condenser is clean, fan is running good, all fans inside are working. I checked the voltage on the start up relay(218721119)and had 120 volts to both terminals. Took the capacitor to a electrician and it is good. It,'s a run capacitor anyway. To me all signs pointed to that relay, so I bought a used one off of ebay for 20 bucks. Same results. I forgot to mention that there are times when it will run for two or three days and not mess up at all. I did not check the motor windings. Guess I thought if they were bad it would not start at all. I thought that maybe the defrost cycle might be screwing up so I put my amp probe on it and when the compressor turns off it draws no current at all. Is there a internal overload in the compressor that could be going bad and how would I check it? I know this is a long post, but I wanted to try and explain what I have tried so far. Any help would be appreciated. Trying not to call somebody to come to the house. Thanks in advance

    Hi,

Some compressors will lock up once they get good and warm/hot.....and some will start back up once you have let it cool down.....that is a sign of a bad compressor.

Is there a internal overload in the compressor
Nope. The over load is built into the start relay...the black and white part on the bottom of the relay.

    That is common.
We all hate intermittent issues for sure!!
Sorry to say you have a sour compressor

I can get a hard start kit pretty cheap. Think that would be a waste of time? Thanks for getting back so quick

    Yes.

Your compressor is more like locking up mechanically rather than having an electrical issue.
