Default Amperage differences in infinite switches

Can an infinite switch that is rated 8.9-11 amps be substitued with one rated 7.7-9 amps?

Putting in a smaller one for a larger amp draw....I would not do this....will it work, likely for a while but not long I would suspect.

kind of what I was thinking. I know once I did this but there was more difference in the ratings than a couple of amps. Damaged all of them.

    Thanks
