Default Whirlpool Washer Only Spins When Empty

    Posted By: myclothesaredirty

I've got an older top-loading Whirlpool washer that will only spin when empty. It fills, agitates, and drains fine, and if the tub is empty will also spin. If there's weight in the tub, however, it will almost never spin - when you open the lid at the end of the cycle the clothes are still soggy, and there's also sometimes some heat and a 'hot' or 'burning' smell - it's not an electrical smell, so I'm assuming it's from some kind of friction.

I've gotten it to spin a few times with clothes in it by leaving the lid open (with something pushing down the latch) and spinning the tub by hand - once it gets started it will usually keep going, although on heavier loads it will eventually slow down and stop again. However, while I don't really know anything about washing machines, something about sticking my hand in a moving piece of machinery like this seems like A Bad Idea?, so I'd like to avoid doing it in the future. Plus I worry the exposed spinning vortex of death will eventually prove irresistible to the cat.

From searching I've found that this is a common problem (the not spinning, not cats in the washer), but I see a lot of varying answers on what causes it. The smell and the fact that the issue seems to be it can't "pull" hard enough to get going makes me think it might just be a belt, in which case I could probably fix this myself with a little help from the internet, for much cheaper than a new washer, but I've got no idea if that's a reasonable diagnosis. Is there anybody that can help me out with kind of a "First check this, then check that" sort of troubleshooting advice? Preferably using small words and with links to pictures?
