Default Ice maker causing freeze up?

    Model - WRF990SLAM00

    Bottom freezer

I am told this fridge does fine with the ice maker turned off. Turn the ice maker on and it freezes up.

Not sure what exactly freezes up. I think it is one of the evaporators. The previous owner said something about a noise in the back. I assume this was the fan hitting ice. I helped a friend bring it home and was hoping to maybe figure out what the problem was.

This was one of those deals that was just days out of warranty.
It is a freebie so myu friend is not too upset with the ice maker being off. It will just be an extra that sits on the back covered porch anyway.

Thanks. If I find out anymore, I may be back on this one out of curiosity. Was just hoping to get a general idea of what would cause this.

I doubt the icemaker has much to do with frosting....but stranger things has happened!
Freezer evaporator frosts due to normal frost free issues, freezer itself often frosts from the door not being 100% closed, FF evaporator frosts from a leaky 2 way valve in the refrigeration system, some partly frost due to a system leak ( common ).

I found it odd. My friend first just told me the fridge worked when the im was off, but didn't when the im was on. I thought maybe the im had a heater that was staying on too long maybe because of a bad stat or something. Then the previous owner talked about it making a noise and taking a yard stick and poking around the fan or somewhere in the back and it would work for a week or so. Actually, it may not have been freezing up. This is over my head. Not familiar with this style at all really.

I guess I am back to it works with the ice maker off but not with it on.
Know of any reason the ice maker might affect the overall operation?

Possible....but if not hooked up to water, the icemaker should be turned off.....if hooked up to water you would think a no cubes complaint would come first before a frosting issue.

Shorted wire in the icemaker stealing power?

No idea, but like I said, it may not have been freezing up. I assumed it had frozen up because the owner had said the fan I think made a racket. I figured it was hitting ice. I really do not know and will not know what it is doing with the ice maker on until it is connected to water and turned on I guess. Or, at least turned on.

    That is more likely.
