    Default Multimeter malfunction?

What does it mean when a digital multimeter flashes different readings when set to ohms and testing a part? Even with a good battery, I might add. Is this an indication the meter is malfunctioning or the part being tested is faulty?

Could be bad test leads. Could be the part is open (high resistance), and if you have your fingers on the ends of the test lead it could be measuring your skin resistance or resistance across the surface of the part if it has any oily film on it.

If you touch the test leads together, you should see 0 ohms on the meter, even if you wave the leads around to test for a broken wire in the leads.

What type of part are you measuring its resistance?

I could mean the part is good. It depends on what you are measuring. Some parts, like capacitors, will change resistance while you are measuring them.

it is usually thermostats and thermal fuses that I test most. I first suspected the battery. Got new battery. I think it may be a tricky neutral lead.

Bad/loose meter leads are the first thing that comes to mind....dirty or corroded terminals would be next and we are not getting a good connection when testing.....bad meter might be next.
Hopefully it is not a sign of poor or bad contacts in the item you are ohming.
