    Default Maytag washer

    Model - A9700

Had what looked like a grease ring around the top of the tub. I removed the agitator and found very little of what looked like grease on top of the tub nut and seal. I had to stick my finger right down on top of the nut and seal to get a little on my finger. I kind of assume even though this was very little, it had built up over time to leave the ring in the tub. Heh, may not be any grease left in the gear case.

Anyway, will part #210690 (rubber o-ring) solve this problem if it grease? Very hard to change?

Other than this, the old machine looks good and seems to work very well.

P.S. I was going to remove the innner tub so I could see if the outer tub needed cleaning as I suspect it does. I loosened the ring clamp, but the top of the tub and the tub itself seem to be sealed together.

Maybe, o ring depends on the shaft and body part from being worn too badly, if worn or scored the o ring may not help.

Not hard, time consuming. Drain oil, pull tranny apart and shaft out.

Remove the ring and yank hard up to separate.

Before I noticed the partial ring at the top of the tub, I had seen what I thought was deteriated leaves or something in the bottom. Got most of them out. Guy said he had left the lid open a few days. Not sure if this makes sense since it was in the garage and I doubt anyone has been cuting grass lately here.
When I got home, more of this stuff was in th ebottom. I assume it shook loose during the move. This is when I found the ring about a third of the way around the top. I could flake it off with my finge nail. If I rubbed my fingers together, it would leave like a black greasey looking mark on the finger tips. Sound like grease?

Evidently someone had tried to clean it at some point since it did not go all the way around. I expected to see sort of a mess when I removed the agitator. This was not the case. I did see the little bit at the nut and oring on the shaft.

    Sounds like it.

Might be oils from body oils, work clothes or such?

Work clothes did cross my mind, Maybe not the guy I got it from, but someone in the past. This stuff would flake off in small pieces. I had intended to make sure the outer tub was clean, then wash some rags in it to see if it leaves spots on them. I might tinker with it a little more in a few days.

A good idea....esp a hot wash to see if anything comes off.
